A music executive, seeking the bathroom, wandered into the wrong warehouse space during a rehearsal. He found Gloom playing a five-minute guitar feedback solo in complete darkness. A contract was signed, mostly because Gloom was too tired to argue. Their 2018 album, The Ceiling is Fine, I Guess, was a surprise hit. Gloom’s lyrics—often just shopping lists read with immense gravitas—resonated with a generation that was feeling "vaguely not okay." His defining hit, "I Lost My Favorite Socks," became the anti-anthem of the year.
